SHAYKH MUHAMMAD AL-HADI WULD SAYYID MAWLUD FAAL

SHAYKH MUHAMMAD AL-HADI WULD SAYYID MAWLUD FAAL
{One of the earliest Mauritanian Followers of Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse & his Special Envoy to Northern-Nigeria, Niger and Ghana}
By: Professor Rüdiger Seesemann (Germany)

In: The Shurafa and the Blacksmith: The Role of the Idaw 'Ali of Mauritania in the Career of the Senegalese Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse (1900-75). {Published in: The Transmission of Learning in Islamic Africa (2004) - [Chapter 3, pgs 72-98], Edited by Dr. Scott S. Resse}
&
The Divine Flood: Ibrāhīm Niasse and the Roots of a Twentieth-Century Sufi Revival (2011)

...Another crucial step in the development of the Niasse branch of the Tijaniyya among the Idaw 'Ali came when al-Hadi ibn Sayyid, a great-grandson of Mawlud Fal, joined the 'people of the fayda (jama'at al-fayda)', as Niasse and his followers used to refer to their movement.

Although, al-Hadi was not an Idaw 'Ali himself, his family background and his great learning gave him a distinguished position within the future generation of the Hafizziya.

The narrative of the submission of al-Hadi Mawlud Fal, as he is called in Jama'at al-fayda, repeats a feature that already occurred in the story of Muhammaddu wuld Anahwi.

Purportedly, the leaders of the al-Hafiziyya, taken aback by Manna Abba’s defection, agreed to send al-Hadi as an emissary to Kaolack in order to get a clearer picture of the developments there. The accounts emphasize that Muhammad al-Hadi arrived in Senegal full of prejudice, but when he saw Ibrahim Niasse face to face, he was so impressed that he could not but submit to him instantaneously.

Maigari cites a letter al-Hadi sent to his family after his arrival in Kaolack. This document illustrates how overwhelming the encounter with Niasse must have been for the young traveler. For almost an entire page, one superlative follows the other:

“When I arrived in Kaolack, I found an expert physician, well acquainted with all external and internal diseases. This is the shaykh of all stations, the tongue of his time, the light of his age, the locus of divine surveillance of His creation, the door that is open for all those who want to enter the sanctuary of the divine presence, our intercessor with God, the unique pole, installed by God, the great cognizant Ibrahim b. al-Hajj 'Abdallah al-Tijani.”

Later Maigari cites another a passage from the same letter where al-Hadi describes how Niasse influenced his personal development:

God granted me His grace in the way that Shaykh Ibrahim made me see the disease of my lower self after I had been veiled from it for so long. For a few days my lower self battled and blinded me, as it had always done. It whispered to me that I was not sick and not in need of a physician. It was sufficient for me to be a descendent of Sayyid Mawlud Fal and Shaykh Muhammad al-Hafiz, the two great leaders and first dispensers of the Tariqa in these regions.

Thus, al-Hadi realized that his lower self had been misleading him and that it was wrong to content himself with being a descendant of great masters of the Tijani path. By identifying affiliation with the bringer of the fayda as the cure, he expands the motive of mystical experience highlighted by Shaykhani.

In both cases, the submission to Niasse and the fayda signals a break with the traditions of the ancestors, and both personalities came to play key roles in the subsequent development of the Jama'at al-fayda in Mauritania and beyond.

In the 1940s, al-Hadi b. Mawlud Fal ascended into the inner leadership circle of the Jama'a. Niasse gave him his daughter Baraka in marriage, and after World War Two, he made him the liaison with the rapidly expanding fayda communities in Nigeria, Niger and Gold Coast (Ghana).

In this way, al-Hadi followed in the footsteps of his famous great-grandfather, who had been instrumental in spreading the Tijaniyya throughout Sudanic Africa in the mid-nineteenth century.

By the mid-1940s, al-Hadi appears as the special envoy of Niasse to northern Nigeria, the region that was to become the arena of the greatest success for the 'people of the faydah' after Niasse's first public visit in 1951.

In the course of his frequent travels to Nigeria, al-Hadi appointed muqaddams throughout the country. Because of his close relationships with the Nigerian followers of Niasse, he soon became a member of the inner circle of the Niasse branch, and he spent more time in Kaolack and Nigeria than in Mauritania.

In addition to his activities outside his home country, al-Hadi established a zawiya in Trarza which attracted a number of students from Nigeria.

Towards the end of the 1940s, Ibrahim Niasse had gained the support of significant sections of the Idaw 'Ali. Yet, those who had accepted him as the owner of the fayda were mainly based in regions outside the heartland of the Hafiziyya: Most Tijanis of Trarza had retained their loyalty of the Hafizi shaykhs, and Niasse was still waiting for the final breakthrough of his movement.

It finally came with the affiliation of Muhammad al-Mishri, one of the sons of Abdallah ibn al-Hajj who had predicted the rise of Niasse as the supreme leader of the Tijaniyya.

EPISTLE TO THE MUQADDAMS
{From Sheikh Hadi Ould Sayid “or” Sheikh Hadi Mawlud Faal}
via: Imam Muhammad Abdullah al-Tijani al-Ibrahimi

Dear Tijani Muqaddams!

Please read this important letter from Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad al-Hadi b. Sidi Mawlud Fal (ra), Khadim Hadrat al-Tijaniyya al-Ibrahimiyya, in which he essentially reminds the Muqaddam that the Murid is the Murid of Mawlana Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani (ra) and his Complete Inheritor and Bringer of its Fayda, Mawlana Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse (ra)..not a Murid of the Muqaddam.

Understand!!!

 The love of leadership or attempting to compete with THE Shaykh of the Tariqa is a serious disease of the heart. The means are only the means.

Understand!!!
