SHAYKH MUHAMMAD AL-HASAN IBN AHMAD AL-KHADIM

(A Teacher of Generations of Ulama & A Mujaddid of Traditional Islamic Sciences in Our Age)

By: Ustadh Mustafa Briggs

Shaykh Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Khadim is one of the senior ulema of Mauritania. Extremely pious and humble, the shaykh is a master in every field of the Islamic sciences, without exception, and one of the leading scholars in Mauritania at the moment.

He is probably most famous in the West for being the Shaykh that Hamza Yusuf took ijaza from for his book, Purification of the Heart, as it was based on his commentary on the poem of Shaykh Muhammad Mawlud. Shaykh Muhammad Hassan has written commentaries on most of his books as well as having having written books on fiqh, usul al-fiqh, usul al-hadith and tasawwuf.

Among his published works is a commentary on the Alfiyyah of Imam Suyuti in usul al-hadith, a commentary on the Nadhm of Jam’ al-Jawami’ of Imam Suyuti in usul al-fiqh, a commentary on the Nadhm al-Kaffaf, which was a versification of The Risala of Ibn Abi Zayd with additions, and a commentary on Ibn Ashir in Maliki fiqh, as well as commentary on Qurratul Absar in Seerah, and numerous books on Tassawuff.

I was blessed to visit him in his village of Taysir, which is a couple of hundred kilometers away from the capital, where he spends his time teaching hundreds of students, who study the traditional West African Mahdara style, memorizing everything they study. The Shaykh also gifted me copies of over 20 of his books from his personal library, as well as the greatest gift of all, his advice and prayers.

SHAYKH MUHAMMAD AL-HASAN IBN AHMAD AL-KHADIM
(One of the Senior Ulema of Mauritania)
By: Mustafa Briggs

Alhamdulilah I’m back in Mauritania, a country that I have been visiting and spending time in for nearly a decade, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to return to Taysir, one of the most prominent teaching villages in Mauritania, and spend time with Shaykh Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Khadim, the founder and Shaykh of the village and one of the senior scholars of Mauritania, just before he left for Tunisia for an eye operation.

The Shaykh is a humble and devout man, and a master of all fields of Islamic sciences, without exception. He has published over 30 works, including books on Fiqh, Usul al-Fiqh, Usul al-Hadith, and Tasawwuf. Among his published works are Commentaries on the Alfiyyah of Imam Suyuti (Rahimahullah) in Usul al-Hadith, the Nazm of Jam’ al-Jawami’ of Imam Suyuti (rahimahullah) in Usul al-Fiqh, the Nazm of al-Kafaf in Maliki Fiqh, (which is a Versification of the Risala of Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani with extra information) and numerous books on Tasawwuf.

He  is also a senior Sufi shaykh of the Tijani tariqah and very strict in following the Sunnah and wary of bid’ah (innovation). He is busy teaching and writing most of the time, he teaches from 11am to sunset with a break at around noon time.

Shaykh Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Khadim is also the scholar who granted Hamza Yusuf ijaza (permission to teach and transmit knowledge) for the famous book "Purification of the Heart." Shaykh Hamza Yusuf expressed his gratitude to him in the acknowledgments, stating,...

"I also thank the eminent scholar and spiritual master, Shaykh Muhammad Hasan ould al-Khadim, for giving me license to teach and translate the poem and whose outstanding commentary on it was my constant companion during the classes and remains so today”.

I am praying for the Shaykh’s health and that Allah grant him a long life, as he remains a pillar and benefit to the Ummah and one of the unique scholars of the age, and I ask you all to do the same 🤲🏿

HAD THE HONOUR of visiting one of the greatest living scholars of Mauritania Shaykh Muhammad al-Hasan bin Ahmad al-Khadīm in his desert village of Tayseer.

It was a blessed meeting. We greeted him, sat in his class, sought his advice, requested his Duas & obtained his books.

SHAYKH MUHAMDI “BADDI” IBN SIDINA {KNOWN AS HASSAN AL-TARIQ}

[Author of Tahniyat ar-Rabii' Mawlid Poem & Closest Confidant of Shaykh Muhammad al-Hafiz (the Founding Figure of the Tijaniyya in Mauritania)]

By: Professor Rüdiger Seesemann (Germany)

In: The Shurafa and the Blacksmith: The Role of the Idaw 'Ali of Mauritania in the Career of the Senegalese Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse (1900-75). Published in: {The Transmission of Learning in Islamic Africa (2004) - [Chapter 3, pgs 72-98], Edited by Dr. Scott S. Resse}

AND

The Divine Flood: Ibrāhīm Niasse and the Roots of a Twentieth-Century Sufi Revival (2011)

Muhamdi Baddi b. Sidina (d. 1264/1847-1848)...had his license from his father-in-law Muhammad al-Hafiz b. al-Mukhtar al-'Alawi (d. 1248/1831-1832), who was initiated by Ahmad al-Tijani in Fez in the year 1800.

The early spread of the Tijaniyya in Mauritania and the Western Sudan was essentially the work of Muhammad al-Hafiz (from whom the branch derived its name) and his successors. Virtually all nineteenth-century West African Tijani leaders received their original appointments from Hafizi scholars.

In a letter from 1934, Niasse referred to the Hafizi chain as “the highest and the most treasured.”

When Muhammad al-Hafiz passed away, his succession was shared by his eldest son Ahmaddu, known as Manna (d. 1325/1907-1908), and his closest confidant and brother-in-law Muhamdi Baddi b. Sidina, known as Hassan al-Tariq (b. 1202/1787-1788, d. 1264/1847-1248).

The epithet Hassan al-Tariq is an allusion to Hassan b. Thabit, a companion of the Prophet known for his beautiful praise poetry (panegyric). Muhamdi Baddi was also a celebrated poet, whose verses continue to be memorized and recited among the Idaw 'Ali.

In the course of the fierce controversies over the teachings of Ahmad al-Tijani that evolved among Mauritanian scholars as early as the first half of the nineteenth century, Baddi composed several poems in defense of his Sufi order that earned him the nickname Hassan al-Tariq (the Tijaniyya order's Hassan).

In addition, he managed to establish himself as one of the three major leaders within the Hafiziyya branch of the Tijaniyya, the other two being Ahmaddu ibn Muhammad al-Hafiz, also known as Abba, and Mawlud Fal.

The head of the Baddi lineage (in the third generation) was Ahmad’s son Muhammad al-Amin (d. 1383/1963-1964).

Muhammad al-Hafiz, the founding figure of the Tijaniyya in Mauritania, had chosen Muhamdi Baddi’s sister Fatima bt. Sidina, known as Hututu, as one of the ten deputies he was allowed to appoint according to his ijaza from Ahmad al-Tijani.

Poem authored by:
Baddi bin Sidina (known as 'Hassan al-tariq' or the Hassan of the Tariqa Tijaniya)

In: His mawlid poem called 'Tania'.

Poem translation extracted from ongoing Translation of the Tania by:

Welcome to the month of Nissan (April),.......the (time of the) birth of the best of all men,

Note;

These couplets where written by the Mauritanian Tijani Scholar and poet Baddi bin Sidina in his mawlid poem 'Tania'.

Baddi was also known as 'Hassan al-tariq' or the Hassan of the Tariqa Tijaniya in reference to Hassan ibn Thabit, the poet of the prophet who defended Islam and praised the prophet with his poetry.

This poem was recited during mawlid season by Sheikh al-Islam Ibrahim Niasse and makes reference to the fact that the prophet saws was born on the 20th of April in the Gregorian calendar.

In accordance with this, Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse established a mawlud at his house in Dakar every 20th of April, a tradition which is still upheld by his family until this day.

The practice is also continued by one of Sheikh Ibrahims muqaddams in Mauritania Sheikh Ould khayri who organises a mawlid in his village of Boubacare every 20th of April.

SHAYKH TILMIDHĪ WULD ‘ABDALLAH (d. 14 AUGUST 2019)

SHAYKH TILMIDHĪ WULD ‘ABDALLAH: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

SHAYKH TILMIDHĪ WULD ‘ABDALLAH: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Written by: Mustafa Briggs
Edited by: Yusuf Hilliard (Flood Plains)

To Allah do we belong and to Him we are returning.

Shaykh Tilmidh
ī wuld Abdallah, born Muammad Mamūd wuld Abdallah was a descendant of the Prophet Muammad from the Idaw ‘Alī Tribe in Southern Mauritania. His ancestor Shaykh ‘Abdallah, from whom he takes his family name, was a teacher to Muammad al-Ḥāfi al-Shinqiṭī, who foresaw that his student would one day become his shaykh. This later became manifest when Shaykh Muammad al-Ḥāfi returned from Fez with the wird of Shaykh Amad b. Maammad al-Tijānī and Shaykh Abdallah became his disciple and received the wird from his former student.

Shaykh Tilmidh
ī in his youth became a successful and wealthy trader, who owned many shops, properties, and containers of goods in Mauritania and Senegal. Tilmidhī told us that during a business trip to collect merchandise in Senegal in 1963, his cousin Muammad wuld Shaykh once asked him to accompany him to the airport to welcome his teacher, Shaykh Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥājj Abdallah Niasse, but Tilmidhī was reluctant to do so as he had no interest in those kind of things.

He accompanied his cousin to the airport anyway, and as soon as he set his eyes on Shaykh Ibr
āhīm, the latter immediately took my heart completely and he followed him to his house in Dakar and then on to Kaolack that night with the intention of giving him allegiance and becoming his disciple.

Shaikh Ibrahim Niass

When he arrived in Medina Baye (Kaolack) that night, he was not able to see Shaykh Ibrāhīm, and he described that night as “ the longest night in his life.” The following day, he was able to meet him and take the [Tijānī] Path from him, and that was the beginning of a love and relationship that would last until his final days.

Tilmidh
ī made up his mind to abandon everything and live with Shaykh Ibrāhīm in Medina Baye. He purchased the land next to Shaykh Ibrāhīms house and built his own. He took to the Path and completed his spiritual training (tarbiya) and in the early 70s. Shaykh Ibrāhīm gave his daughter Ndeye Fatou Niasse in marriage to him. Tilmidhī also requested the hand of Shaykh Ibrāhīms other daughter Ndeye Maryam for his younger brother, Shaykh Nima wuld Abdallah, and upon hearing this Shaykh Ibrāhīm said to him, There is nothing you can ask me for that I can refuse you.”

His nickname «Tilmidhī», which means my pupil was given to him by Shaykh Ibrāhīm Niasse himself, as he once testified to his sincerity and said «anta tilmidhī» (you are my student) and so Muammad Mamūd decided he would rather be called by this name than his actual name, due to his love of Shaykh Ibrāhīm.

Tilmidh
ī also accompanied Baye on his final journey to Fez, Morocco to visit Shaykh Amad al-Tijānī in the 70s alongside his companion and mentor, Shaykh Muammad al-Mishrī, and was with Shaykh Ibrāhīm during his final trip to Paris in the 70s.

Shaykh Mukht
ār b. al-Ḥājj Ibrāhīm Niasse informed us that during his fathers last days in Senegal, before his final journey to London, Shaykh Muammad al-Mishrī arrived to Kaolack to visit Shaykh Ibrāhīm with Tilmidhī (who was his driver at the time), a young Shaykh wuld Khayrī, and others. Upon hearing of their arrival, Shaykh Ibrāhīm told his son Mukhtār, They were the ones I was waiting for, and they spent a few days in Kaolack before heading to Dakar.

It is worth noting that Tilmidh
ī was one of the people who accompanied Shaykh Ibrāhīm to the airport in 1975 with Shaykh Muammad al-Mishrī, and upon their return to Mauritania, Mishrī passed away.

Im
ām assan Cissé also narrated that on his deathbed, Shaykh Ibrāhīm said to him, There are four people whos service (khidma) to me unmatched, and Tilmidhī was one of them.

He lived his life in love and service to Shaykh Ibr
āhīm and his family and disciples, and was praised by Baye himself in some of his poetry, as well as by his mentor Shaykh Muammad al-Mishrī and other major students of Baye. And he never missed spending the months of Rabī al-Awwal and Ramaḍān in Medina Baye since the time of Shaykh Ibrāhīm until his own death on 14 August 2019.

Al-amduli’llāh, we were blessed to spend many days and nights with him in Medina Baye and in his home in Nouakchott, Mauritania, and everything Ive written here Ive heard directly from either Shaykh Tilmidhī himself, his sons or the sons of Shaykh Ibrāhīm Niasse.

May Allah the Exalted unite him with his beloved Shaykh Ibr
āhīm in the highest level of Paradise.
