AL-USTAZ AHMED OULD ADDA

(Eminent Khalifa of Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse in Mauritania)

We regret to inform you all and offer our condolences for the loss of one of the eminent Khulafa of Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse in Mauritania, al-Ustaz Ahmed ould Adda.

An Arif, an Alim, an Imam, a Qadi, and a complete Wali, Ustaz was born in 1924 in the Boutilimit department of Mauritania, and memorised the Qu’ran at a very young age before mastering all the other Islamic Sciences and being known as one of the foremost scholars in all areas of knowledge in his early youth.

He then connected to Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse in 1954 and obtained the Tariqa Tijaniya and its Tarbiya from him, and alongside his sisters Daaiya and Abdallah ould Abdallah became one of the most prominent muqaddams of Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse in Mauritania. In 1956 he attended Shaikh Ibrahim Niasse’s famed Tafsir of the Qur’an and became one of those who was given a turban by Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse to signify his completion and mastery of the Tafsir, and in 1957, Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse ordered him to accompany Sidi Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Kabir ibn Muhammad al-Bashir ibn Muhammad al-Habib ibn Sidina Shaykh Ahmad Tijani, to his house in Dakar where he lived with him and taught his children (which includes the current Khalifa of Sidi Ahmad Tijani in Morocco, Sidi Muhammad el-Kabir Tidjani) the Qur’an and the Islamic Sciences, then in 1958 when Sidi Muhammad al-Mishry established his village of Mata Mawlana, he moved there and served as the Imam, Qadi, Ustaz and Mayor of the Village, overseeing most of the villages activities and teaching the sons of the most prominent Tijani Shuyukh in Mauritania such as Muhammad al-Mishry, Muhammad al-Nahwi, Shaykhani Ould Tulba, Shaykh Abdallah ould Jayjubi, Sidi Abdallah ould Khayri and even the sons and grandsons of Shaikh Ibrahim Niasse who were resident there during that period.

In 1975 after the deaths of his Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse, and his mentor and companion Muhammad al-Mishry with whom he lived with and assisted as a right hand for over 20 years, he renewed his affiliation in the Tariqa with his nephew and former student Cheikh Ould Khayri, and took him as his Sheikh, despite being 30 years his senior, and in 1978, he accompanied his nephew, Cheikh ould Khayri, to establish the village of Boubacar where he served him as he served Muhammad al-Mishry as the Imam, Qadi, Ustaz and Mayor of the Village before handing the Imamate to his Son, Imam Muhammadan Ould Adda in 2008.

Ustaz Ahmad Ould Adda passed away on the first weekend of Febrary 2018, and was buried in Boubacar by his nephew and Sheikh, Cheikh Ould Khayri, after more than 50 years of service as an Imam and teacher and Caller to Allah.

He was given Ijazatul Itlaq (Unlimtied Ijaza/License) in the Tariqa Tijaniya by Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse, Saydi Ali Cisse, Muhammad al-Mishry, Sheikh Abdallah ibn Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse and Cheikh Ould Khayri.
