1.0 Shaykh Ibrahim Niass: Gawth Zaman & Sahib al-Faydah

In the 1930s, the career of Ibrahim Niass reached a critical stage. In 1929, he had proclaimed himself as the Sahib al-Faydah (“Master of the Spiritual Flood”, or “spiritual overflowing”), a title that refers to a saying of Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani in which he predicted the advent of a Tijani shaykh under whose direction vast numbers of people would join the Tijaniyya.

Being the owner of the faydah also implied that he laid claim to the spiritual position of the Gawth al-Zaman, the Supreme Leader of the Tijaniyya of his time.

2.0 Shaykh Muhammaddu wuld Anahwi (1907-2003)

Shaykh Muhammaddu wuld Anahwi (b. 1325/1907 - 1908, d. 1424/2003) who is considered the first Mauritanian follower of Niasse and remembered as working tirelessly on the fields of Kosi, contrary to what one would expect from a person of sharifian status.

One version of the story of Wuld Anahwi, recounted to me by a senior son of Ibrahim Niasse, goes as follows:

When the Mauritanians heard that there was a man in Senegal claiming to be the bringer of the fayda, they were of course skeptical, because under normal circumstances they would never submit to the authority of a black person. They could not imagine that a black man should have received the fayda. A black scholar or legal expert (mujtahid), that was still conceivable. But a black man as the carrier of such a divine secret, this was just unthinkable. Therefore one of the

Mauritanians came to Kaolack to dissuade Shaykh Ibrahim from insisting on his claim. This was Muhammaddu wuld Anahwi. He came to Senegal to get to the bottom of the matter. Otherwise the Mauritanians only came to the black people to collect their gifts (hadaya). Wuld Anahwi knew the description of the bringer of the fayda, but he did not know Shaykh Ibrahim yet. When he met with him he was immediately convinced, and he wrote back to Mauritania that the fayda had indeed appeared in Kosi (The Divine Flood, 2011).

The Book chapter “The Shurafa and the Blacksmith (2004)” also submits thus;

The credit of being the first Mauritanian disciple of Ibrahim Niasse goes to Muhammad ibn Anahwi al-'Alawi.

The official historiography of the Niasse branch of the Tijaniyya relates that Ibn Anahwi - who was in his early twenties at the time - immediately went to Kaolack on hearing of the emergence of the Faydah (Divine Flood).

Upon his first encounter with Ibrahim Niasse he was convinced that he had indeed met the rightful owner of the faydah.

For the following two years, Ibn Anahwi studied with Niasse in the village of Kosi (near Kaolack), and the hagiograophic accounts stress that he worked for his new Shaykh in the fields (farm) during the rainy season - a remarkable exercise for a member of the noble Idaw 'Ali who usually did not undertake physical labor themselves.

From Kosi, Ibn Anahwi wrote a letter to his fellow tribesmen in Mauritania where he explained that the faydah had appeared at the hands of Ibrahim Niasse.

The news is said to have reached al-Hadi ibn Sayyid, a leading member of the Fal family, but he decided to ignore it, as it seemed impossible that a Kori (Black African) could be the owner of the Faydah.

Nevertheless, on his arrival home in Trarza, Muhammad ibn Anahwi continued to spread the message about Niasse being the expected Sahib al-Faydah.

3.0 The Turning point

The turning point came when he (Ibn al Nahwi) met Manna Abba, a great-grandson of Muhammad al-Hafiz ibn al-Muktar (a direct companion of Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani who introduced the Tijaniyya in Mauritania).

During this encounter, Ibn Anahwi tried to convince Manna Abba to join him in accepting the claim of Ibrahim Niasse, and he uttered the following verse;

“I come to the watering place when I hear the sound of the herdsman's call [to come drink] * oh my people, this is the [shaddy] tree, and here is the water!”

At this point - probably some time in 1934 or early 1935 - Manna Abba decided to go to Kaolack in order to meet Niasse personally.
